VAT is usually the main charge
For ordinary online shopping, the key number is the taxable value: product price plus shipping and packaging. Most online purchases use the usual Swiss VAT calculation. Some essentials, such as many books, food items, and medicines, use a lower calculation.
Amounts below CHF 5 are generally not invoiced. That is why most purchases under about CHF 62 including shipping often avoid import VAT. For lower-taxed essentials, the practical limit is about CHF 193.
Clearance fees can matter more than VAT
If VAT is charged, the carrier may also charge a clearance or handling fee. Swiss Post lists a basic customs clearance fee of CHF 13 for EU origins and CHF 16 for other countries, plus 3% of the goods value, capped at CHF 70.
What this estimate leaves out
- Weight-based customs duties for specific product categories.
- Special taxes for alcohol, tobacco, or restricted goods.
- Courier-specific handling fees outside Swiss Post.
